Nervous system regulation for kids can play an important role in preparing children for a successful return to school. August brings a major transition for children and families. Summer schedules change, school routines return, and children face new teachers, classrooms, expectations, activities, and social situations.
For some children, this transition can lead to increased worry, irritability, difficulty focusing, sleep changes, emotional outbursts, or resistance to returning to school.
Before assuming a child needs more coping skills or another behavioral strategy, it may be helpful to ask a different question:
Is their nervous system ready to use those strategies?

Regulation Comes First
When children are anxious, overwhelmed, distracted, or struggling with emotions, we often focus first on changing the behavior. But behavior doesn’t happen in isolation.
The brain and body are constantly responding to the environment. When the nervous system senses stress, it can shift into a heightened state of alert or become overwhelmed and disengage.
For children, difficulty with regulation may look like:
- Trouble concentrating or sitting still
- Irritability or emotional outbursts
- Changes in sleep
- Headaches or stomachaches
- Avoiding school or activities
- Increased worry
- Becoming withdrawn or shutting down
These behaviors don’t always mean a child is unwilling to cope. Sometimes their brain and body are having difficulty regulating. Supporting nervous system regulation for kids can help create a stronger foundation for navigating everyday stressors.

Knowing a Coping Skill Isn’t the Same as Being Able to Use It
Children are often taught deep breathing, grounding, positive self-talk, taking breaks, and other coping strategies. These can be valuable tools.
But knowing a coping skill and being able to access it during a stressful moment are two different things.
When the nervous system is overwhelmed, using those skills can become much harder. Supporting regulation can help create the foundation children need to focus, manage frustration, communicate their needs, and use the strategies they’ve already learned.

How Neurofeedback and Biofeedback May Help
Technology has created new ways to help people understand and work with their nervous systems.
Neurofeedback and biofeedback provide information about processes happening within the brain and body. With appropriate guidance and training, this feedback can help individuals practice developing healthier patterns of regulation.
These approaches don’t replace therapy, medical care, healthy routines, supportive families, or caring educators. Instead, they can provide another tool for supporting mental and physical wellness.

Preparing for School Starts Before the First Day
Families can begin supporting regulation before school starts by gradually returning to consistent sleep schedules, creating predictable routines, encouraging movement, allowing downtime, and practicing regulation strategies when children are already calm.
It’s also important to pay attention to changes in sleep, mood, attention, physical complaints, or behavior as the school year approaches.
We spend a lot of time making sure children are academically prepared for school. This August, consider adding another question:
Is their nervous system prepared for what’s coming?
At Integrative Mind and Body Services, we believe support doesn’t have to wait until someone reaches a crisis. By helping children better understand and regulate their brains and bodies, we can help build a stronger foundation for whatever comes next.
